Seven Day Meme: Secundus Dies

  • Sep. 18th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
hey, how's it going?
So today's meme requirement is that I post a favorite picture. First I was gonna go with a painting (but I didn't want to chose something predictable. Something by Michelangelo, some sort of Roman statue, a painting of Heliogabalus smothering his dinner gusts with a deluge of rose petals, a picture of some band I like. No to all of them. Instead, something much more interesting. Well, maybe not more than a Michelangelo. Let's not be crazy.)
Big ol' picture ahead! )

Tomorrow: a favorite book/fanfic. I am pretty sure it will be a book.

In the absence of too much watchable television, and in the hours I am not wasting in a job I despise, I'm trying to be somewhat productive. There seems to be a train of thought that says that, job-wise, I should be doing something else with my time (it's true!), so I paint. I'm not sure how that translates into "not working here anymore", but I am sure that it is at least tangentially related. So anyway, here's some stuff I did/am doing.

Also missing: complaints about the weather. ) Oh yeah, my room is still a mess. It was good for a while, but I did not finish that first time, so now I'm back to my normal state of "everything's on the floor". It may not be as bad as that last time ::looks around:: or maybe it is. I am not sure. I got a bigger bed, so I lost some floor space. Perhaps I'll handle that on Tuesday. I need to find my wallet, and I am sure it's in here somewhere.

Maybe next time I will discuss my new favorite house-related problem: we need to get a pole or something in the basement, because the shoddy 70's workmanship that gave us such hits as Hold On, Why Are My Shoes Floating Away (basement floods) and Wait, Why Are The Walls Cracked Like (old house shifting)That has manifested a new issue... The Top Floor Is Slowly Falling Down (one day my upstairs room will be my downstairs room). There's a guy coming to look at it tomorrow.

For one thing, cluttered homes tell us more about the personalities of its occupants than do homes stripped to their carefully arranged essentials--it's the optional, extraneous items we leave lying around that bear the stamp of our quirky inner selves. -- A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder - How Crammed Closets, Cluttered Offices, and on-the-Fly Planning Make the World a Better Place by Eric Abrahamson and David H. In the age-old tradition of telling people you are going to do something in an effort to shame motivate yourself into doing something, I am going to post pictures of my ridiculously messy room and then clean it!

Since I am always working on the weekends, my manager decided to give me this entire weekend off. I left work at 7:30 yesterday and don't go back until 11AM Tuesday morning. That gives me somewhere in the vicinity of 87.5 hours of time at home. Now, subtracting somewhere between 8 and 10 hours per day for sleeping, that brings us to somewhere between 63.5 and 47.5 hours... hours in which I have nothing to do (save for watching Kings tomorrow at 8 and trying to watch the race sometime around that same time). I don't care about the Fourth of July, so it's not like I have a cookout to go to or anything. My plans for the three day weekend was "to stay home, maybe watch some tv, do some painting, sleep... you know, the usual." Instead, I am gonna clean. I can't spend three straight days in this squalor. So, I will clean it, and catalog my progress (I'd say "or lack thereof", but no... there will be progress!) Okay, enough with the yapping, on to the cleaning! Now, where are those trash bags?

You know how comedians say, 'Everyone knows someone who lives in a mess, and if you don't, it's you.'? It's not you. )

Look... memes. Again.

::rambling::, rambling, words, explanation
Memes! But none of the "good grief, why are you typing so much?! People have lives, you know!" question-and-answer variety. Those come later. These are much different and way less wordy. (Mainly because it is freezing in here and my fingers are way too cold for all of that typing.)

Meme III. In which costumes are worn. )

Because I should be working... here's a meme.

Here is a meme I stole from somewhere else. Basically it is an excuse for me to actually use the camera I tote around every day and to not be working on the work I should be working on or the painting stuff that I could be doing. And if there is anything I will do, it is not do what I should be doing.

1. If you're reading this meme, consider yourself tagged. (I'm not a tagger, so consider yourself not-tagged)
2. Post these directions, or directions of your own making on your blog.
3. Post six seven pictures of what's going on in your life right now. They don't have to be interesting, so don't worry.
4. Give each a title.
5. Bask in your artiness.
I'm not much of a basker, so here goes nothing... )

On an unrelated note: Oh man! I am in the middle of the last episode of the second season of Mad Men (which I will most likely be talking about in my next post. Not just the show, but something really cool and show-related that I found but can't discuss until the show is done) and now I am mad that I will have to wait forever and a day to see season three. I am not sure what's gonna go down in the last 20 minutes, but I hope that at least one of the characters I hate gets what's coming to them! I am assuming they will not, but man, with so many unpleasant people doing so many unpleasant things, someone needs to get something!

busy, work in progress, working, getting on the ball... or not
So, we all know about my terrible job. It is a store staffed with the motley-est collection of weirdos and slackers ever assembled in any supposedly money-making endeavor. Really, it's a wonder most of these people even make it into the building everyday, but somehow they do... much to my dismay. And now that I have a camera, I feel that I need to take my work-related stories to the next level. And that level is "work-related stories... with pictures". Today's theme is "Holidays".
Warning. Candy corn ahead. I repeat, candy corn ahead!! )
politics, important stuff, news
So, today I went to see Joe Biden (again) downtown at Price Bryan Performance Place, AKA "that place behind the library and between the Y and the Cultural Center. You know, the place where they do free movies in the summer." This is the second time Joe has been here in less than six weeks, and unlike last time, this time I was prepared. (Meaning, I had a camera with a fully-charged battery.) Plus, unlike the last appearance (which, if you recall, I rambled about and took a bunch of terrible too-far-back pictures of), which was a joint Biden-Obama affair, on a Saturday, at a pretty big venue, this was on a Monday afternoon, in a smaller place. Just my kind of event.

We got there right around the time doors opened, but the crowd was rather small. Unlike last time, there was actual security involved, with all of these extra serious cops/security/whatever making you go through a metal detector, then using that wand thing. I failed the wand twice.. once for 80 cents in change, once for my Biden button. Those guys were not the friendliest. Then we had to walk the Volunteer Gauntlet, with their clipboards and their sign-up sheets. They are like the outside-of-the-polls fliers people, only more spread out,a nd slightly more tenacious. Anyway, once we got past all of that, it was time for the big show! Only with a whole lot of pre-show waiting. Oh how I love a good "standing around outside in the cold doing nothing for two hours"... only I don't. But it was worth it in the end though, so I will not complain. So, how was the event? Follow the cut!
Be advised. I took a lot of pictures. I repeat, A LOT OF PICTURES. Seriously. Many, many, many pictures. )

Memes of the nerdy and pictorial variety.

  • Oct. 5th, 2008 at 11:53 PM
::rambling::, rambling, words, explanation
First off, a semi nerdy meme. But it's the kind where you learn something in the end, so I like it! It beats the same old '"what color is our cell phone?" ( I don't have one!) or "What is your favorite food?" (chicken.) thing. And it has the added bonus of being both topical and something that is making fun of someone stupid. It's the rare Win/Win/Win!

Meme 1: As was demonstrated in an interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade.

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun.

What have I learned? I can't spell s-e-p-a-r-a-t-e )
Well, that was long! (But educational! You have to give me that!) Now, on to something a bit less "college research paper" and more 'wasting time on LJ! "A few weeks months (I really did think it was three or so weeks ago. It was July!) back bean did a meme where you take a picture of what's in your bag and then talk about it. I wanted to do it then, but I had no (locatable) camera. Now I have one, and I am not finished with my recap yet, so here's a look inside my bag. (This is kind of timely, as this week they have instituted a Random Bag Search policy at work. I don't really care about that one, as they all know what's in my bag anyway. Now, the "We tell you when to go to lunch" and the "Everyone stays in the building until 30 minutes after we're closed, no matter if you're finished or not" policies? Those suuuuck!)

1. Take a picture of your bag
2. Now dump everything out and neatly adjust them, and take a picture (no matter how embarrassing)
3. Talk about the items inside.

Bean has 12 items.. that's a lot! Will i have more? Or less? Probably more. )
Today (hopefully before work!) "One Of Us, One Of Them" (maybe) and something else. But, if I don't get that stuff up before the show, I want to go on record as saying that I am pretty excited about something that's gonna happen tonight! I really hope they don't mess this one up!
politics, important stuff, news
Summary: After much going back-and-forth on whether or not to go, I have returned from the Biden (and that other guy) rally! I went to Wal-Mart, bought a sweet new camera (it makes movies too!), walked too far, hustled through the crowd, stood way back, complained about crying babies, saw not much of anything, got way too hot, clapped for Joe, left while Obama was speaking and returned home in time to beat the crowd. All in all, a good day. Oh! And Ma found ten bucks on the ground! Five of which I spent on my brand spanking new Joe Biden for Vice President 2008 button!! A pretty good time was had by all. And now to watch the actual TV coverage, so I can see everything that I could not see, because I was way back in the nosebleeds. Oh, and there are pictures. Later there may be a video. That depends on if I can figure out how to upload and embed it.

this is a long one.. a very, very long one. You've been warned. )

Here is a link to this newspaper guy's Twittering of the event. He was Twittering while I Was still in the bed! This lady on the news said people started lining up at midnight! Midnight?! As the young texters say... GTFO! MIDNIGHT!? It did not start until 12:15PM, and "doors" did not open til 10. Midnight is just craziness. And, because my pictures are what you'd call "not so great", here's his Flikr photo stream. More pictures at: John Ford, ateichman, wjarrettc, CityViewGreensboro and [info]biden_daily

books, to do list, reading
I think I hear someone at the door, so I do not have time for witty intro text. I thought I had more time. I wrote all of this expecting a 9:40 arrival, and go a 9:16 one! Eh, whatever. Even when I came home and edited more stuff in, I did not add much up here. Just the part about how I did not add anything. Anyway, here goes... just a cut and all kinds of random stuff.
this is the cut. )
(Hours Later) Sidenote on Why I Am Kind Of Angry At The Used Book/CD/DVD Store: When I begrudgingly spend my hard-earned dollars on a crappy movie based on a crappy TV show I Will never watch, I would like not to be charged twice for it! Now I have to go in today and try to convince them that I am not lying when I say "I only bought one copy of this movie that you have listed on my receipt as simply DVD $14. Just great!
music
[info]squeegee_burble started a new meme that combines three of my favorite things. Good music. Pretty pictures. Wasting Time. Seriously, that mixture counts four about how I spend about 27% of my time. Thus, this meme is mathematically proven to be one of the best things ever.

Rules!
1) Open your top 25 most played songs on iTunes. (Wait! I just now see that I read it wrong! I did the "random shuffle" thing. Oh well, this took so long that there is nooooo way I am starting over! Plus, my 25 top played consists of not that many groups, most of which I don't even know what they look like. This is due to my love of the fanmix.)
2) Post pictures of each band.
3) Once the band has been guessed, edit with an upload of the song! This way we can ALL SHARE THE LOVE!

This way for the pictures! )

The word of the day is...

busy, work in progress, working, getting on the ball... or not
I am supposed to be working bored/sleepy/watching tv so here is a Wordle of the last (I can't remember, but I think it's) eight entries here. I am not sure if it makes words big based on frequency of use, but in both of the ones I did, I got the same word really, really big both times. (Upon further research, that is exactly what is going on: "The size of a word in the visualization is proportional to the number of times the word appears in the input text.") Anyway... here is is.

And now... work sleep.
::rambling::, rambling, words, explanation
I am actually six episodes behind on these. But because I said I would do this, I am going to finish them all. Yeah, they are all posted way back, and no one will ever see them, but it deserves it, so it will get it. Plus, this gives me something to keep me from clicking that link, and will use up enough of my non-work time to keep me too busy to go to the places I always go, which are now awash with spoilers. Curse you, whoever it was that put episode 10 up early! A lot of people have vowed to wait and do this last episode right, and I agree. I will wait for the Official Airing Time, and watch it on television like everyone else who does not know that if you are in the right place at the right time you can see things early. Plus, since it is such a Big Deal, I am going to go watch it with other people, and that will be no fun if I have already seen it.

Cold Open: "Deserve aint't got nothing to do with it." - Snoop
Big old stakeout. Dozerman in the weeds having issues (what else is new?), Sydnor on the eyeball. Lester at HQ. Partlow and associates (Muscle on muscle?) up in some warehouse. It seems that everything is finally in play. The code has been cracked. The final piece of the puzzle has been found (and it was Cheese) and everything is ready to go. This usually happens in the next to the last episode of the season. I like that, as it leaves one ep left to show how things wrap up. Most cop shows do the Big Arrest in the final ep, and then you end up going "Yeah, and then what?!"

Penultimate: next to the last. Only one more to go. This is the one that will set everything into motion for the last push. Next week is the white flag episode, the end of an era and all of those other cliches. One hundred and fifty minutes left.

And how many words? I don't even want to think about that. )
